Two years ago, I was traveling in the south of France. I spent the weekend documenting hundreds of drawings that spanned an entire career of work in comics, commercial and fine art. Most of my time was spent in the studio but I was lucky to have time in the kitchen with the artist and his family and had the opportunity to enjoy the bounty of French cuisine. Although Ginger is not a native plant to the region, they used a locally made ginger syrup as a tea or natural ginger ale soda. I fell in love with the ginger syrup and set out to recreate it on my own.

As an artist and someone whose thoughts are consumed with food, I am fascinated with the relationship between food and art as part of our daily routine and this product pays respect to both. The ginger syrup is produced here in Brooklyn in small batches. While the focus of the first syrup is not on the locality of the ingredients but more the love of the product by the artist, each syrup will tell a story and be made in a small batch. The labels are numbered and letter pressed. My brother and I fill each bottle by hand. The syrups appeal to bartenders, moms and children and is an eco-friendly way to make beverages with out buying individual bottles of ginger ale.

The second product, which is still in the research phase, is boiled apple cider syrup. Perfect for a fall cocktail or over ice cream. We will focus on the farm and apple orchard that we work with in Upstate New York. Drawing attention to the importance of supporting local farms will be the main focus.

Beyond the products, Morris Kitchen is a brother-sister run monthly supper club. We source our ingredients from the Greenmarket and from our friends at Rooftop Farms. The goal of Morris Kitchen is to provide quality products that are made with genuine care, by hand.
